A career in writing comes with uncertainty, as does working in many other creative fields. Success as a writer is unpredictable, and many writers often struggle with finances when working on a project. Even a finished book comes with no guarantee of income since you just can’t predict how well your book will sell. You may wish to seek outside funding through sponsorships to help you cover your expenses in times when writing is not paying the bills.
- Grants – The great thing about grants is they don’t have to be repaid. But grants are often awarded based on very specific circumstances, like need, merit, or demographics. Some grants may also provide funds based on genre.
- Fellowship – A writing fellowship provides you with space, funds, and time to focus solely on your writing. But they aren’t for everyone. Fellowship programs are often very picky about who they accept. Some only choose published writers, while others have very specific criteria that one must meet to be selected. Plus, writers with families and other obligations may struggle with dropping everything else to spend weeks or months away from home just to write.
- Other sources of funding – Crowdfunding is a unique method of getting your writing project off the ground, and it can work well if you already have a large following on social media. There are also many writing contests that provide varying amounts of prize money.
Writing is not usually a career you just jump into and begin making money, especially if your goal is to write a book. Many writers maintain a full-time job while writing, but if you choose to do this, it limits the time you have to spend completing your book. If you wish to have more time to write and are looking for alternate sources of funding to help you take care of expenses, consider applying for some of the many writer sponsorships available.
