Almost every author has experienced the burning desire to write without any of the inspiration that normally goes with it. While frustrating, there are better things to do than simply sit around and wait for an idea to strike. When you are a writer, you are often responsible for finding your own inspiration to write.
Get methodical
Don’t let lack of inspiration stop you from reaching your writing goals. Instead, go ahead and block out some time specifically for writing. The goal here is simple—don’t do anything else but write during this time.
You can always use this time for writing exercises to get the wheels turning. Sometimes inspiration just needs a bit of a nudge before it soars off on its own.
Play a game
Word association games are great for unleashing the inspiration that’s buried inside of you. The game is simple enough, and you can always adjust the “rules” to fit your needs. All you need to do is:
- Pick a book at random
- Think of a number and open to that page
- Write down the first word you see
- Write down all of your associations and thoughts with that word
It might seem a bit menial at first, but soon enough you’ll see the pathway that you’re carving for your inspiration.
Start cooking
Doing something like cooking, cleaning or even just going for a walk can both occupy your time and free up your mind. Let your mind wander during these types of tasks, or hone in on the sensation of the heat sizzling on a pan or the sound of the wind in the trees. Letting your senses roam free during tasks that don’t require much thinking allows the floodgates of your inspiration to open wide.
Take a nap
Sleep deprivation can do a number on the human body and mind. If you’re chronically sleeping too little then your brain can’t function to its fullest. Set an alarm for anywhere from 10 to 20 minutes for a bit of beneficial recovery without feeling overly tired after. When you wake up, go straight to writing and see what comes out!
Finding the inspiration to write often involves creating situations in which your inspiration can freely flow. If you are overstimulated, sleep deprived or struggle to create time to write, you’re blocking your inspiration’s pathway. Instead, be sure to focus on ways in which you can create ideal environments to get as creative as possible!
