You’ve heard it said that writing a book starts with writing, meaning authors must sit down and start typing, recording or writing (by hand). It’s likely that you’ve also heard tips on how to be consistent with a writing routine and how to avoid writer’s block. There’s something important that must occur before all of that, however. Before you can write a novel, you must first have an idea for one.
Sounds easy enough, right? On the contrary, it’s often easier said than done. If you hope to see your project completion, you not only have to create an idea but create an idea you love. You must love your idea so much that you can barely think of anything else.

There are several things to avoid (like the plague) when you’re trying to come up with an idea for your next novel:

- Thinking that your idea must be totally unique—most stories are merely other stories retold in different ways.
- Settling for a second-rate idea when you’re having trouble thinking of a great one—give it time; it will come.
Trust your instincts. When an idea for a novel comes to you and you absolutely love it, start writing. Keep writing, page by page, chapter after chapter, until you’re done. Whether this takes a month or five years, it’s okay, provided you love your idea and stick with it until the end.
