Christian fiction isn’t limited to stories about Jesus. In fact, while many novels include characters who are believers, as well as various ideologies within the faith, some authors choose to take a more subtle approach when telling stories based on Christianity. For example, an author in the Christian fiction industry might write a book in the sci-fi genre or fantasy category.
Sci-fi and fantasy are often used interchangeably. However, they are separate, distinct categories. While they have several things in common, they differ in numerous ways, as well.
Here are the main differences between sci-fi and fantasy fiction
One of the most famous sci-fi books ever written was “1984” by George Orwell. In the fantasy category, the epic tale by J.R.R. Tolkien called “Lord of the Rings” continues to thrill readers, with more than 150 million copies sold to date. Both sci-fi and fantasy typically have “other worlds” as a central focus.
It’s been said that sci-fi deals with futuristic possibilities while fantasy focuses on the impossible. In Orwell’s novel, for instance, there are many analogies and symbolic references to the major political figures of the author’s time. The story takes readers into the future, painting a bleak picture of what life might be like if governments gain totalitarian control over a population. Tolkien’s story takes readers back in time to medieval worlds of orcs and elves, wizards, and more.
Examples of Christian stories in these categories
C.S. Lewis wrote a sci-fi series entitled, “The Space Trilogy.” The main character in the series is kidnapped and taken to other planets, where worlds that have not been tainted by the “fall of man” are discovered. Lewis is also known for his Christian fantasy novel, “The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.” The story is about redemption, forgiveness, and sacrifice. Many of the characters, such as “Aslan, the Lion,” represent Christian figures, such as Jesus.
Sci-fi novels often feature outer space, extraterrestrial beings, futuristic aircrafts, dwellings and worlds. Fantasy usually turns readers’ minds back in time to make believe, ancient worlds, magic and epic battles. There tends to be a lot of action in both types of stories.
Heroes and technology
Sci-fi and fantasy both typically contain protagonists (heroes) who save the world or right the wrong or defend mankind from an imminent threat. In a sci-fi book, you might find more robotic themes, technology, AI themes, etc., whereas fantasy books usually feature humans or human-like creatures where loyalty, honor and moral integrity are priorities. Before choosing a genre for your next book, do some research to test the market and see what people are reading.
