Post: Where can you find new book ideas?

book ideas

If you’re sitting away waiting for a wave of inspiration for your next novel, you’ll likely be waiting a long time. That’s because inspiration isn’t typically something you stumble upon; it’s something you must seek. So then, when it comes to new book ideas, where should you seek inspiration?

No two authors are the same. What (or who) inspires you might be different from the things and people that inspire another writer. However, there are several great places to start where the average author can turn to discover new book ideas.

You might find new book ideas in music

Have you ever known someone who claims that they are more productive in their studies or work if they have music playing in the background? Scientific evidence has shown that music not only boosts mood and motivation, but it also improves focus, speed accuracy, and memory.

This makes music a great option to explore when you’re seeking ways to stimulate new book ideas. While the average “head-banging” heavy metal style music might not be the best choice when your goal is to improve focus and creativity, alternate options like classical music or jazz may be just the ticket.

Reading is a good brainstorming activity

Most best-selling authors are avid readers. If you’re seeking inspiration for new book ideas, read as many books as you can in a variety of genres. Keep a notepad handy and jot down interesting words, characters, situations or ideas that pop into your head while reading.

Who are your favorite authors? Have they published any new stories lately? If so, make it point to read what they’ve written. There’s bound to be a few new book ideas hiding between the lines for you.

Human beings are interesting creatures

Talking to family and friends, or meeting new people when you’re running errands, out on the town, at work or on vacation, is one of the best resources available for stimulating new book ideas. People are fascinating, and observing their behaviors or asking them questions is a great way to activate your brain when you’re trying to think of an idea for your next novel.

Another place you might find new book ideas is in your old writings. Do you have half-finished stories filed away somewhere? Old journals? Letters that you wrote or received long ago? Sometimes, taking a trip down memory lane or revisiting things you wrote in the past can bring fresh, new ideas to mind.
