“Did you ever want to get out of something that you already know is impossible to escape?” Finn rubbed his calloused fingers over his red-rimmed eyes and looked up at Griff, the sullen and shockingly stereotypical bartender at what Finn considered to be the only worthwhile Irish pub in D.C. “It’s like trying to run from your own skin. It’s maddening, and the desperation is only made worse when you’re forced to admit that the storm you’re living in is one you’ve made for yourself.” He sighed deeply and looked around. The smell of stale smoke, what he assumed to be hops, and Griff’s incredibly potent bar-top cleaning solution hung in the air. Finn took a slow, deep breath through his nose and, when he did, the trio of scents seemed to mix in a way that created an odor so chemically sweet that, for just a second, it reminded him of the dollar-store body mist he used to wear as a teenager. He shuddered involuntarily and squeezed his eyes shut. He reached into his jacket and pulled a phone from his breast pocket and fired off a quick text: < ARTIFACT NOT PRESENT. CONFIRMED ELIMINATION. > He became aware of his tightened jaw and forced himself to relax. He took deep, slow breaths in an attempt to slow his heart rate as he looked around the room slowly, trying his best to appear normal. As usual, and despite his immense experience, he was convinced that every breath he took might betray him and shout his secrets to the world. Still, he knew he was right where he needed to be, where he had planned to be—where he wanted to be—at least for the moment; secure in the dark, seedy ambiance of his favorite bar and the confidence that it always offered him the solace of anonymity—anonymity, and perhaps more importantly, a back exit.
