Comparing the writings of authors, such as Charles Dickens, Mark Twain or Nathaniel Hawthorne to writers of today like John Grisham, Freida McFadden and Cara Bastone might seem like comparing apples to oranges. As with fashion, music and other industries that change with the times, writing has evolved (or, as some critics would say, “devolved”) over time. What are the main differences between classic literature and modern novels?

There are typically three types of readers in the classic literature category: those who love it, those who hate it and those who only read it when forced to do so, like in high school English classes. Some people describe the authors of the classics as brilliant. Others claim to be “bored to death” by anything written prior to 1995 or so.

Differences between classic literature and modern novels

While many U.S. high schools still require students to read classic literature, some have shifted to modern novels, instead. The following list includes several of the main differences between fiction from these two eras:

Most classic literature was written by Caucasian males, although there are exceptions.

Cultural norms, politics and various modern ideologies have changed the way people think; therefore, writings from classical eras may be offensive to today’s readers due to stereotypes, racial slurs, and other issues.

The vocabulary in modern novels is much less formal, complex, and daunting than the language readers encounter in the classics.

Stories like Mark Twain’s “Huckleberry Fin” or Harper Lee’s “To Kill a Mockingbird” often come under scrutiny and criticism for the way in which black people are depicted in these stories. Charles Dickens is frowned upon by many modern readers for the behavior and speech of characters like Fagin from “Oliver Twist,” who is widely viewed as an antisemite.

Reading the classics through a modern lens

Many English teachers continue to introduce their students to classic literature, albeit using a creative approach. For example, one teacher told her students to read Hawthorne’s “The Scarlet Letter” with feminism in mind, paying close attention to how women are treated throughout the novel. It’s also helpful to bridge the gap between eras by finding ways to connect with and relate to classic stories through modern resources, such as finding modern songs or movie characters that reflect characters or circumstances in books written long ago.

A careful review of classic literature might lead readers to discover that times have, in fact, not changed all that much. In F. Scott Fitzgerald’s “The Great Gatsby,” for example, there are several incidents and comments that suggest certain issues, such as same-sex attraction. The way fictional societies address such issues in stories from classical eras as opposed to modern times may greatly differ, however. Comparing the classics with modern novels is a great way to spark discussions in book clubs or add to your resources if you aspire to be an author.

Prior to sending your novel to a publisher, you’ll want to do everything you can to make sure it has achieved its full potential. The best means for doing so is to use beta readers and professional editors. Don’t even think about submitting a manuscript until you’ve completed a thorough edit and revision—preferably, more than once.

It’s okay to edit your own work, but it’s best if you also hire a professional. Reviewing your own writing is challenging, especially if you try to take on the whole story at once. Instead, consider editing one aspect of a manuscript at a time. Will this be a tedious process? Yes, but do you want your story to be in tip-top shape when you hand it over to an editor? Also, yes.

Before submitting a manuscript

Editing your work one aspect at a time before submitting a manuscript means you’ll be reading the entire story several times. The idea is to focus on a specific aspect of the editing process with each read-through. Here are the main categories:

Grammar, punctuation and spelling

Consistency regarding character appearance, names, facts, or details mentioned throughout the story

Style and flow

Dialogue

Final read

Take advantage of online tools, such as Grammarly and other resources to help check grammar, punctuation, and spelling. Make sure details mentioned throughout the story remain consistent, such as describing a character as a “blue-eyed girl.” She should not show up several chapters later with brown eyes.

The style and flow of your story should put readers at ease. If you use complex language or sentences that never seem to end, etc., readers will quickly lose interest. To check dialogue, it’s helpful to read your story aloud; this way, you will catch it if an exchange between characters doesn’t sound right. For the final read, it’s best to use beta readers, who can review the story in its entirety through an objective lens, then provide feedback.

Objectivity is a key reason to hire a professional editor

Even after editing your own work one section at a time, it’s wise to hire a professional editor before submitting a manuscript to a publisher. A professional editor can offer an impartial review. Professional editors can identify problems regarding the editing sections mentioned earlier in this post. They can also make sure you have fully developed characters and a polished manuscript that meets current industry standards.

Is it possible to earn a decent living as an author without hitting the best-seller list? Yes, it is, if you’re good at what you do. If you’re a prolific author and consistently provide quality material for your readers, you can build a loyal fan base even if your name isn’t in the Top Five on the NYT’s best-seller list. There are several writing tips that can help you achieve success.

If you’re launching at least one or more books per year, you may consider yourself a prolific author. To sustain the pace and, perhaps, improve your chances of “making it big,” it’s a good idea to try some of the writing tips mentioned in this blog post. Whether you’re a novice or have several book titles under your belt, there’s always room for improvement.

Use these writing tips to keep readers coming back for more

The best writers are avid readers; so, if you’re not reading a vast genre of books on a regular basis, you’ll want to start right away. You don’t have to restrict your reading to your specific writing genre; in fact, it’s far more beneficial to read stories in a wide variety of categories. In addition to reading more books, try putting some of these writing tips to good use:

Don’t bury the lede; instead, let your readers know early on (even in the first few paragraphs) where a story is headed.

Limit paragraphs to three to five sentences.

Use simple words and descriptions; readers shouldn’t have to use Google to get through a story.

Present a story in a structured way that makes sense to the average person.

Ask yourself what would happen if you omitted a particular sentence or paragraph; if you determine that the story wouldn’t change at all, then delete that section.

The typical reading level for an average adult in the U.S. is seventh to eighth grade. These writing tips can help you present a story in a way that is easily understandable and relatable to your readers.

Christian fiction fans like things to be simple and clear

Imagine two yard sales on the same street. One is a cluttered mess with random unmarked items strewn across tabletops and stuffed in boxes and bins. The other is neat and organized, with prices clearly labeled and items arranged in categories. Wouldn’t you be more likely to shop at the latter rather than the former?

The same goes for stories. The writing tips shared in this blog post can help you avoid unstructured clutter and messiness, so that readers will feel at ease and want to stay with a story until the end.

Have you ever been excited to read a book, then disappointed by the time you finished it? You felt let down, like something was missing. You determine that the author didn’t focus on character development. This is a big mistake, one that inexperienced writers often make.

Character development should be a top priority for fiction authors. Not only should readers be able to get to know the characters but relate to them (at least, the main ones) as well. Publishing a novel that lacks fully developed characters is like taking readers into a beautiful home that is empty inside. There might be a good plot, interesting setting, and potential for a great story; however, with undeveloped characters, readers will be dissatisfied.

Keep these character development tips in mind

Less is more when it comes to how many characters you should include in your next Christian fiction story. Character development is less daunting if you keep the number of people in the story to a minimum. In fact, part of your editing and revision process should always include a thorough review of characters to check whether any might be omitted.

Once you’ve decided which characters will remain, you can try the tips shown in the following list to help you achieve sufficient character development:

Choose archetypes before creating characters, such as a hero, an orphan, a mentor, an antagonist, a caregiver, etc., bearing in mind that each archetype must be a good fit for the plot.

Create a detailed physical appearance for each character.

Add a personality to accompany each character’s physical traits, making sure to include unique flaws, quirks, or habits.

Write a list of interview questions and think of how each character would answer them.

Determine what desires, needs, goals, etc. each character possesses.

Decide what the internal arc of each character will be as the plot unfolds—what is each character’s state-of-mind at the start of the story, how will he or she change, and what will his or her final condition be at the end?

There’s no such thing as “too much detail” when you are developing characters for a fictional story. While every piece of information might not make the final cut (because you might determine that some things are unnecessary) the more fully developed your characters are, the easier it will be to bring them to life in the story.

With a background that includes earning a degree in Philosophy and teaching English in Thailand, Thomas R. Britten is also a husband and father of three. In addition to his studies and work in a secular environment, Britten spends a lot of his time preparing sermons for his congregation as a Protestant pastor. He has since added another accomplishment to his portfolio, becoming the author of a Christian dystopian thriller.

Britten’s novel, “The Final Witness,” is a gripping narrative that combines Biblical prophecy, spiritual warfare and mystery. It’s a story that offers readers hope and encouragement in uncertain and tumultuous times. Persecution, courage and trust in God are the key elements of the main character’s journey.

A boy becomes an orphan in this Christian dystopian thriller

In “The Final Witness,” Britten tells the story of David Fisher, who loses both of his parents in a sudden, tragic event. He moves in with an aunt, who then enrolls him in an academy that operates under the rule of a sinister man. Young David suffers a crisis of faith as several classmates disappear, and he must decide whether to conform to survive or risk everything (including, perhaps, his own life) to stand for Truth.

This Christian dystopian thriller compels readers to question their own beliefs and determine how far they’d be willing to go to defend those beliefs. Mysterious messages on a chalkboard. Interactions with unseen alien entities increase suspense and create an intense and intriguing storyline.

Five-star reviews online

Customers are giving “The Final Witness” rave reviews, with many 5-star ratings and comments on platforms like Goodreads and Amazon. Several readers have stated that this novel is one they “couldn’t put down” and would highly recommend to others. Comments include describe the book as “bold,” “captivating” and “thought-provoking.”

For readers who enjoy faith-based fiction stories that contain messages of hope while providing intense, action-packed narratives, “The Final Witness” is a Christian dystopian thriller they won’t want to miss. Its protagonist is relatable and the issues and situations he encounters are similar to problems many Christians are facing in the world today. Authors in the past who have taken readers down the rabbit holes of dystopia include George Orwell (1984), Aldous Huxley (Brave New World) and Ray Bradbury (Fahrenheit 451). Thomas R. Britten now adds his name to the list.

Some authors churn out book after book. Others write one best-seller that stands the test of time. Either way, every story begins with inspiration. Someone or something is going to spark the idea that leads to your next novel.

What or who will it be? While some ideas arise in a sudden or unexpected manner, you don’t have to sit around and wait for inspiration. Seek it. If you’re unsure where to begin, keep reading to discover several ways to inspire your next book.

Your next novel idea may be right under your nose

You may not have to search far and wide to spark inspiration for a new story. Your best-selling novel might be waiting for you amidst the people, places, and experiences of your everyday life. Observe your family, friends, and colleagues. Take conversations and styles of speech to heart and think about them later. One person or a group interaction might set an idea in motion that can later become your next novel.

Another method to inspire new book ideas is to visit an art gallery or a museum or listen to classical music. The world’s great artists and musicians are masters of inspiration. How does their work make you feel? Close your eyes and listen to the music; do you see a story unfolding?

Revisit your old writings for new ideas

Like many authors, you might have several unfinished novels lying around. Take time to read through them. There might be a character worth reviving, perhaps, in a different setting, era, or circumstance. Maybe you’ll feel inspired to combine characters from various drafts, working them into a new story together.

What issues matter to you?

Consider current events, social issues, and cultural norms. Are you passionate about a specific topic? Let that be the spark of inspiration that ignites your next novel. You can also try a method called “world-building” based on the topic. Create a world in detail. Describe it and create characters who live in it. Spend time thinking about the world you’ve created and see what types of stories unfold.

Interview your characters

Perhaps you have a few ideas for characters in your next novel but are lacking inspiration for the story. Try compiling a list of questions for each character. Act as if you are interviewing them. Ask where they come from and why they want to be in the story. What are their fears, goals, and dreams in life? In short, the characters you’ve created spark inspiration for your next novel.

If you were to interview the most prolific authors of all time, you’d no doubt discover that many of them have unique routines and tips to share with budding authors. What works for one writer, however, may not be a good fit for another. For example, Kurt Vonnegut (who was, perhaps, not as prolific as some but, in fact, penned 14 novels before he died) refused to eat breakfast until he had written for two and a half hours. Others say eating protein before writing each morning is a better way to go. So, which life hacks will help you improve as a writer?

It’s all trial and error. In this post, you’ll find several tips from published authors who swear by their routines and tricks of the trade. If something strikes a chord with you, give it a try. It’s true that your lifestyle, diet, mental and emotional state, etc. can have a significant impact on your writing, for good or bad. Perhaps these suggestions from other authors might help you avoid the dreaded writer’s block and become more productive.

Life hacks to improve productivity as a writer

Hunter S. Thompson, famous for his immersive style that blended fiction and non-fiction, would write passages from his favorite books. He thought that it helped him know what it felt like to have quality writing pass through his own hand. Keep in mind that this form of writing is for training purposes only—never plagiarize!

English playwright Samuel Johnson used to say that most of a writer’s time should be spent reading. Remember this when you’re testing life hacks to improve your writing skills. The best writers are typically avid readers. In addition to reading for pleasure, international best-selling author Robert Greene recommends reading for research before writing your next book. He said that trying to research while simultaneously writing a book is never a good idea because “trying to find where you’re going” while doing it usually gets you lost.

Skip the details when writing a draft

Essayist Joshua Wolf Shenk advises authors to get through their first drafts as swiftly as possible. You can fill in dates, numbers, and other specifics afterward. Think of the first draft simply to create fluid thought. Get the wheels of the story turning. There will be plenty of time for revisions and refinement later.

Running is among the life hacks that might help you become a better writer. One novelist said that he would run to leave one world (writing) behind and enter another (running). If running isn’t your cup of tea, try going for brisk walks everyday instead.

Storytelling has and always will be an integral component of the human condition. The oldest surviving written tale comes from Mesopotamia, 2100 B.C., entitled, “The Epic of Gilgamesh.” This is widely considered the world’s first narrative. Since then, millions of books, translated into many different languages, have captivated readers throughout the world. Stories shape lives even when (or, perhaps, especially when) they are fictional.

Stories shape lives by evoking feelings, inculcating ideologies, and influencing cultures. Shared memories, recounting experiences and words of wisdom passed down through generations help form individual and collective identities. Just as the food you eat affects your body, the books you read have an impact on mindset, worldview, beliefs, and coexistence with others.

Stories shape lives by challenging the status quo

Authors who understand that stories shape lives can use their words to compel a shift in perspective. A writer is free to challenge the norm or raise awareness toward the plight of an underdog. A well-written story can inspire empathy, compassion, and solidarity among people from diverse walks of life.

Christian-based narratives have the power to help people transform their minds. Such stories can sow hope where there was once despair. Reading about forgiveness, redemption, and mercy can uplift those who are downtrodden. As a writer, you must ask yourself what you want your characters to accomplish in the minds of your readers.

A literary tapestry woven over time

A novel typically reflects the social, economic, political, and spiritual issues of its time. For example, if you were to read a story about a family from the 1950’s, the characters would undoubtedly include a mother who did not work outside the home, a father who did, and several children who played outdoors every day. A tale about a family in 2026 would likely be quite different.

Stories shape lives by stitching together the threads of various generations and eras over time. While fiction is a “world of make believe,” most authors understand that their stories must be realistic and believable to the average reader. This is why not only do stories shape lives, but the opposite is also true: lives shape stories, as well. When you sit down to write your next book, remember that you’re not only writing for today’s readers but also for those yet to come. What you write now will continue to shape the lives of future generations.

If you’re considering becoming an author, one of many decisions you’ll make is to determine a genre. While some authors create stories in multiple book categories, prolific writers (especially those with best-sellers) typically establish a chosen genre as part of their brand. It’s helpful to analyze market data when choosing what types of stories you’re going to write. In today’s market, Christian fiction sales are on the rise.

Question: Is it possible to be a non-Christian who writes Christian fiction books? Answer: Yes, but it would be challenging, to say the least. If you’re thinking of choosing this genre (whether you’re a Christian or not), it’s a good idea to understand why readers are flocking toward books in this category.

Christian fiction stories often center on hope

Readers enjoy Christian fiction for many reasons. A key factor that may have something to do with a recent surge in sales for this genre is that such stories often evoke feelings of hopefulness. Today’s world is turbulent, which often causes anxiety, uncertainty, and, in worst cases, despair. Reading a story that’s full of hope provides a brief escape from the stress and trials of daily life.

People are tired of profanity and excessively graphic content

It’s no secret that Hollywood, as well as the entertainment industry in general (including film, music, books, etc.), has taken flack in recent years for going overboard with sex, violence and vulgarity. This may be another reason why Christian fiction is increasing in popularity among readers. They’re seeking “clean,” wholesome stories.

Offensive language and “raunchiness” have no place in a novel based on Christian ideologies. This doesn’t necessarily mean that such stories should never contain a “cuss” word. An author might feel like it’s appropriate for the sake of realism. However, readers who choose this genre generally prefer such words to be used sparingly, if at all.

Redemption is a powerful hook

Christian fiction often includes themes of redemption. In fact, such themes are often entwined with the feelings of hopefulness mentioned earlier in this post. In addition to hope and redemption, readers seem to enjoy stories of forgiveness, faith and the idea that a loving God can (and does) help people overcome obstacles in life.

Successful Christian fiction authors know how to create characters who struggle with real-life issues. By presenting stories through a faith-based lens, they offer readers inspiration, encouragement and support in their own spiritual journeys.

Each author’s journey is unique. Instant success is rare; most writers are familiar with rejection letters. While people might decide to try writing books for various reasons, most authors hope to be able to generate income with their stories.

If you’re new to writing books, there are several things you’ll want to do before taking on a project. Not doing these things doesn’t necessarily mean you won’t be able to finish a novel. You might not, however, enjoy as much success in the sales department as you would have if you had completed this startup checklist.

Give due diligence to research before writing books

Imagine that you’re walking in a park one day and an idea for a story pops into your head. As a person who hopes to earn a living writing books, it would not be advisable to forge ahead before “testing the waters” to see if there’s an audience for your story. Many readers buy their books online; this is why landing on the best-seller list on shopping venues like Amazon should always be your goal.

Running a keyword search for a new idea is a good first step to take when writing books. You’re looking for phrases that shoppers might type into a search bar, such as “Christian fiction,” “Stories of redemption,” “Christian action thriller” or whatever fits your idea. You can then analyze search results to determine whether your story has a chance of making it into a top spot, which produces a profitable monthly income.

Create an outline for your story

While there are many prolific authors who don’t use formal outlines, it’s best to create at least a basic roadmap for each new story, especially if you’re a novice. Outlines help you organize your thoughts. They provide a visible plan that you can follow and refer to as you transfer the thoughts in your head to written form.

Next come all the firsts

Whether you’re new to writing books or have been a best-selling author for decades, each story involves taking a first step. Sitting down to bring your characters to life can feel like a daunting task. This is why it’s helpful to focus on the firsts: Set a goal (including date of completion) to write the first sentence, the first page, and the first chapter.

If you’ve decided to make writing books a career, you might want to give this 3-step beginners’ plan a try. Test your idea (to determine if there’s a market), create an outline, and conquer the firsts before settling in to allow your novel to unfold. These three steps form a firm foundation from which you can bring your stories to the world.
